Istanbul’s airport hosts robot musicians

Industrial robots will notate the sounds of istanbul and turn into musicians playing percussion instruments at Istanbul’s Sabiha Gökçen International Airport as part of a project called "Tales from the Future." The event is part of a sound installation titled "1 City, 1,000 Sounds" that is being hosted in conjunction vvith the istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture agency.

Designed by composer and multimedia artist Sinan Bökesoy, the multimedia event aims to establish a metaphorical link between the acoustic potential of the Composer Sinan Bökesoy designed the project.
Bosphorus Strait and local percussion instruments. The sounds of istanbul are being recorded through microphones situated at the Maiden’s Tovver and Sepetçiler Kasn.

Later, sounds in Ihese recordings vvhich include the boat homs, seagulls and calls to prayer - are separated using a special sofrvvare program to become percussion parts for seven different robots. The sounds are then broadcast live at Sabiha Gökçen Airport.

This musical design, vvhich interprets the melodies of the Bosphorus, will play at the domestio terminal of the airport throughout August.
